EMT Exams in Delaware

The EMT exams in Delaware are conducted by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) that assesses the skills and competency of the aspiring candidates in providing the emergency medical aid in various casualties, like traumatic injuries, accidental cases, or any other medical condition. Those, who aspire to become an EMT, have to undergo a program program in the state of Delaware, and after completing the program, they are required to take up the exams to obtain the national certification and licensure to practice as a qualified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Components of the EMT Exams

Cognitive Exams

The cognitive test is basically a computer adaptive test (CAT) that aims to test the skills and knowledge of the appearing candidate in the areas, such as airway, respiration, cardiology, obstetrics, gynecology, and other EMS operations. Each candidate is allotted a time period of 2 hours to complete the exam. You are supposed to answer approximately 70-120 questions within that time frame.

Psychomotor Exams

Psychomotor exams conducted by the NREMT aims to assess the candidate’s performance in various areas of emergency medical services, which include:

Patient assessment/management of the traumatic patient
Patient assessment/management of medical patient
Cardiac arrest management
Bag-valve-ventilation of an apneic patient
Immobilization of the spine
Long bone fracture immobilization
Joint dislocation immobilization
Traction splinting

Upper airway adjuncts and suction
Mouth-to-mouth supplementation of oxygen

Registration and Scheduling of the Exams

When a candidate completes his/her EMT program and wishes to take up the exams in order to obtain a national certificate, he/she needs to contact the state certification office for that. As the authorities find you eligible enough to take up the exams, you will be notified via postcard eligibility letter. As you get eligible to appear for the tests, it becomes mandatory for you to clear up the exams within 6 months of your eligibility period. Besides, you will be given maximum 6 attempts to clear your exams. If you fail to qualify the exams in these 6 attempts, you will have to take the whole program program all over again. Candidates can register them through various available options, such as the internet, the telephone, the fax, and the standard mail registration.

Internet Registration and Scheduling

Registering and scheduling your EMT exams in Delaware through the internet is the fastest way. For registering through the internet, you need to have a valid Master/VISA card, and you are required to enter its number and expiration date. As your registration gets completed, you will see a screen from where; you can opt for the desired date and location to schedule your exam.

Telephone Registration and Scheduling

Next to the internet, the telephone is the fastest way to get your exams scheduled. For this type of registration as well, you need to have a valid credit card, and required to tell its number and expiration date. Candidates registering over the telephone also have the opportunity to register during the non-business hours through an Interactive Voice Response system (IVR).

Fax Registration and Scheduling

This is yet another method to register for the EMT exams and get your exams scheduled. While filling the details in the form, make sure that the information entered by you on the form is thoroughly correct and authentic as if there is going to be any mistake in your form, it will be sent back to you for rectifications. For this type of registration as well, you need to have a valid credit card.

Standard Mail Registration and Scheduling

This method of registration and scheduling is made for those, who do not want to reveal their credit card details and other related confidential information. In this case, students can register by paying through the banker’s check or money order. Fill the registration form found in the bulletin and ensures that you have your name printed on the check in order to ensure the proper assignment of your fees.

Cancelling and Rescheduling the Examination

If you do not wish to take up exam on the scheduled date and want to get it cancelled, you can do it, but you need to inform at least two days prior the scheduled date of the exam. If you do not inform 2 days in advance, your registration will be deemed as invalid, and your fee will also not be returned back to you.

You can reschedule your exam the very next day of the scheduled date. It is not possible to reschedule your exam on the same day due to scoring and reporting procedures.

Missed Appointment or Late Cancellation

All the candidates should arrive at the exam center at least 30 minutes before the commencement of the exam to get acquainted with the sign-in process and to complete other formalities. However, in the following cases, registration of the candidate might get cancelled, and moreover, his/her fee will be forfeited.

If a candidate does not inform about the cancellation at least 2 days ahead of the scheduled exam date.
If a candidate arrives late after the exam has already started.
If a candidate fails to present a valid identity proof in front of the authorities.
If an aspirant does not appear for the exams and not even notify about his/her absence.

Reporting to the Examination Site

It is essential for all the candidates to report a minimum of 30 minutes before the scheduled exam time. However, reporting later than this can make the authorities cancel your registration and your fee will also not be refunded.

It is compulsory to report the exam site with at least two proofs of identity, out of which, one need to be a government issued identity card, such as the state ID card, driving licensure, passport (valid). All these identifications must have your photograph and signature on them in order to be verified as genuine by the authorities. Besides, all the intermediates and paramedics are supposed to bring along a current EMT certification. However, they can also show a reinstatement letter issued by the OEMS (Office of Emergency Medical Services).

Note: All types of student ID cards and employment cards are considered as invalid and will not be counted as the identity proof.

However, there are a few things, which you are not allowed to bring along at the testing center, like cameras, laptops, recorders, watches, alarms, calculators, backpacks, handbags, colored pens, ball point pens, dictionaries and thesauruses, and any sort of reference or study material, whether bounded or leafed.

Exam Results

Any candidate, who is appearing for the EMT exams in Delaware, is supposed to score a minimum of 80 percent marks in order to clear the examinations successfully. To ensure accuracy and authenticity, grades of all the candidates are analyzed statistically before the results are published officially.

Results will be published on the website. In order to view the result, the candidate is supposed to enter his/her Date of Birth along with the social security number. The only way to view your result is to view it over the internet. The results will not be handed over personally or narrated over the telephone or sent via the mail. However, if you desire to have a hard copy of your result for any reference purposes, you can take out the print from the website itself.

Candidates, who do not score well in the current examination, may take up the next session of the exam, but only after 15 days of the current test. The candidate is given 3 attempts to clear test, but if he/she remains unsuccessful in clearing the exams even after 3 attempts, he/she needs to show his/her documents of official remedial program of 24 hours for getting additional 3 chances to qualify the test.

Steps to view your result on the website

Step 1- Log into the website and choose the option “grade report”.

Step 2- Next, choose another option “profession” from the given list of options.

Step 3- A screen will pop-up asking you to enter your DOB and social security number. After filling the requisite information, click on “exam results”

Step 4- Finally, your result will be viewed on your screen showing your grades in all the areas.

Tips for Preparing for the EMT Exams

Pen down or highlight the important points to make learning easy.
Take up online practice tests to know the areas of your strengths and weaknesses.
Pay more heed to the areas where you scored lesser in the practice tests.
While answering the questions during the official examinations, always answer to what is being asked to you and don’t answer irrelevantly.
Stay calm and composed, and have a check over the anxiety and nervousness that flow inside you constantly.
Do not take many breaks during the exam as it will be deducted from the official exam timings.
Pay more attention to the topics, such as airways and respiration, which are most likely to be asked by the NREMT.
