EMT Exams in Florida

EMTs are the technicians and clinicians that are skilled and trained to provide the initial relief to the patients in various cases of casualties, such as an accident, traumatic injury, fractures, fatigue, and other emergencies. During the program, prospective Emergency Medical Technicians are trained in every aspect of the emergency services.  They have to clear all the exams conducted by the state in order to become a qualified technician. EMT exams in Florida are conducted by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.

Components of EMT Exams


Cognitive Exams

The cognitive exam is a computer based test where a candidate is given 2 hours to demonstrate his/her skills and competency by solving 70-120 questions. The areas where a candidate’s skills and knowledge are tested are as follows:

  • Airway and Respiration
  • Ventilation
  • Cardiology and  Resuscitation
  • Medical Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • All types of EMS Operations

Psychomotor Exams

In order to clear the psychomotor examination, a candidate should have skills in providing various emergency care and should be able to demonstrate his proficiency in the same.  A candidate needs to ace topics, such as traction splinting, management of traumatic and medical patient, bag-valve- mask ventilation of apneic patient, bleeding control, administering oxygen to an unconscious patient, oxygen administration to breathing patient, long bone fracture immobilization, and joint dislocation immobilization.

Scheduling and Registering for the Exams

When an aspirant completes his/her paramedic program and wishes to take up the exam, he/she needs to get registered. Upon finding him/her eligible for taking up the tests, authorities will notify him/her via a postcard eligibility letter. Eligibility letter has a few terms and conditions, such as a candidate is expected to clear all the exams within a period of 6 months, and he/she has maximum 6 attempts to clear his/her exams.

A student can register for the EMT exams in Florida via a number of mediums, like:

Internet Registration and Scheduling

The internet registration is the fastest way to get yourself registered for the EMT exams in the state of Florida. For this, you need to have a valid VISA/Master card, and at the time of registration, you need to fill in the credit card number and its expiration date. As you complete the registration, you will be directed to a screen to choose your desired dates and locations to take the exams.

Fax Registration and Scheduling

A valid Master/Visa card is mandatory even if you are registering via fax. It normally takes 4 working days for fax registration to get completed. Candidate registering via this method should make sure that he/she has entered all the information correctly, else his/her registration form will be returned, and he/she will need to correct and resend the form.

Telephone Registration and Scheduling

It is also a faster mode to get registered for Emergency Medical Technician exams. In this mode of registration also, you need to have a valid Master/Visa card and reveal your credit card number and its expiration number upon asking. Candidates also have the facility to get registered through the Interactive Voice Response System (IVR) during the non-business hours.

Registration and Scheduling via Standard Mail

This is the method of registration where the person is not required to reveal the details of his credit card and any other confidential information as this method uses banker’s check and money order as the payment modes. Candidates are supposed to fill the registration form and send it to the respective address along with the fees. Your name should be mentioned on the banker’s check or money order to ensure that the fee for the examination is properly assigned.

Cancellation and Rescheduling of the Exams


It is possible for a candidate to get his scheduled exam cancelled and get his/her fee refunded. But, for this, you need to notify two days prior to the scheduled date of your exam. However, if you fail to inform 2 days before the examination and inform post that, your fee will not be refunded.

There is also a provision to cancel the exam on the scheduled date and reschedule it on another day. In this case, the candidate cannot reschedule the exam on the same day due to reporting and scoring process. The candidate can reschedule it on the very next day or the day after depending upon the space available at your respective center. For example, if your scheduled exam date is Wednesday and you want to cancel and reschedule, you can do it for Thursday or Friday.

Late Cancellation or Missed Appointment

As it has been already mentioned that a candidate is supposed to cancel his/her appointment minimum 2 days prior the scheduled exam date failing to which can bring him unfruitful consequences, like invalid registration, no fee refund, etc.

In the following cases, the candidate’s registration is likely to get invalid and his/her fee will also not be refunded.

  • If a candidate doesn’t turn up for the exam and doesn’t even inform for his/her non-arrival.
  • If a student arrives much later after the exam has already started.
  • The candidate arrives for the examination, but fails to provide a valid identity proof.

Reporting to the Examination Site

All the aspirants are expected to reach the exam center 30 minutes before the scheduled time to get acquainted with the sign-in process and complete other formalities.

Before beginning the exam, aspirants are also supposed to sign a bond letter stating that they will not share any exam related information with any other candidate and will keep it confidential.

As a candidate arrives at the examination site, he/she is supposed to present two forms of identity proofs in order to appear for the test. At least one of those identity proofs should be a government issued identity card, like passport, state ID, driving license, etc., and should have your photograph and signature over it. Apart from that, intermediates and paramedics are also supposed to bring their current EMT certification card or a reinstatement of OEMS in order to test.

Note: No employment or student ID will be considered as the identity proof and will be considered invalid.

While appearing for the exams, candidates must take care of certain things, which are not allowed inside the examination premises, such as handbags, bag packs, laptops, cameras, recorders, camcorders, watches, alarms, dictionaries, notes and reference materials, thesauruses, etc.

Exam Results

In order to successfully pass the exams, a candidate is required to score a minimum of 80 percent marks. Marks and grades of all the aspirants are analyzed statistically to make sure the results are accurate and entirely authentic.

To maintain the confidentiality of the results, all the aspirants will be notified of their results through a website, which is password generated. Whether you have failed or passed the exams, your result will be showcased on the website in both the cases.

To view your result on the website, you are supposed to go through the following steps and procedures:

  • Log into the website and choose the option “grade report” from the given set of options
  • Next, choose “profession” from the sub-options that appear on the screen
  • After that, a screen will pop-up, which will ask you to enter your date of birth and social security number that was issued to you at the time of registration.
  • As you enter both the information, status of your result will be displayed showing whether you have passed or failed.

To pass the EMT exams, a candidate is given 6 maximum attempts. After 3 unsuccessful attempts, you need to submit your official document stating the completion of 24 hours of remedial program. After that, you will be provided 3 additional attempts to clear your exams.

Keep in mind that the result will not be handed over personally. Even, it will not be sent via mail or narrated on the phone. It will only be displayed on the website, and if you want a hard copy of your result, you can take a printout of it.

Tips for Preparing for the EMT Exams

  • There are a few topics, which hold more importance in comparison to others, such as airways, respiration. Pay more attention to these topics.
  • Solve different practice tests that are available online to know your strengths and weaknesses. Also pay attention to the time that you consume to solve the test.
  • Analyze the areas of your weaknesses and try to overcome them.
  • Stay calm and keeping away the nervousness. Answer the questions with confidence.
  • Do not beat around the bush, and answer to what has been exactly asked to you.
  • Do not take too much breaks voluntarily as it is going to be deducted from the official timing to solve the exam.
