EMT Program in Alaska

Like other states, where EMT program is offered at three different levels- Basic, Intermediate, and Paramedic, EMT program in Alaska is also offered at these levels. Eligibility Criteria


The state of Alaska requires students to complete the following prerequisites:

  • The student must be of 18 years of age.
  • He/she should have a valid driving license.
  • He/she must have passed a 10th grade or high school examination.
  • Some institutes, offering EMT program, also require COMPASS test marks. This tests the student’s ability to read, write and speak English along with the mathematical skills.
  • The student must be certified by the current CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certification.
  • A drug test and criminal background check is a must.
  • The aspirant must provide a valid proof of various immunizations, such as measles, mumps, diphtheria, tetanus, Hepatitis B, chickenpox, rubella, and pertussis.
  • A negative report of tuberculosis, chest X-ray, as well as, a flu check up that has been done within the last 12 months is also needed to be submitted by the student.

Coursework/Curriculum

The EMT-I level of program is similar to the national standard EMT-Basic. It is the foundation for all other levels. It offers basic life support skills, like immobilization, managing oxygen, CPR, suction and bleeding, patient assessment, respiratory management, etc. Students also learn to check the vital signs of the patients and operate the basic medical equipments.

To enrol for the EMT-II level of program, students need to provide at least 10 contacts with patients being an EMT-I. This program prepares students to administer intravenous medicines and fluids.

The EMT-III level of program furnishes advance skills. Students learn to handle cardiac emergencies and use of epinephrine, atropine, lidocaine, and morphine.

The highest program level is often called as MICP (Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic). The program course is much advanced as compared to EMT-III level.

At the end of the program, the student gets well-versed in the following fields:

  • EMS Systems
  • Legal and ethical issues
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Proper lifting and moving of patients
  • Oxygen techniques and airway management
  • Vital sign assessment, patient history, documentation, and communication.
  • Handling emergencies, like respiratory, cardiac, allergic, diabetic, and poison/overdose.
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Bleeding and shock management
  • Injuries of head, spine, chest, neck, abdomen and musculoskeletal injuries.
  • Pediatric emergencies, physiological and physical differences between adults and children.
  • Ambulance management, rescue and extrication, hazardous situations, and handling of multiple patients.

A final written and practical exam is conducted after the completion of the program, which includes the above mentioned curriculum. The student needs to pass this examination in order to be eligible for the EMT certification.

Duration and Fees


The duration of all the three levels of EMT program in Alaska is as follows:

  • EMT-I: This program is 120 hours long.
  • EMT-II: For this level, classes of at least 50 hours are necessary.
  • EMT-III: It can also be completed in 50 hours.

The fee structure for EMT program in Alaska varies according to the colleges/universities, but the approximate fee is around $2,740 to $5,898 for in-state courses while some colleges charges less fees.
