These are the basic requirements that aspiring candidates need to meet in order to take EMT training:

  • Students must be of at least 18 years of age.
  • Students should possess a driving license that is valid.
  • A 10th grade level or high school certificate is a must.
  • Certain schools or colleges also require COMPASS or ACCUPLACER test scores, which tests mathematical skills and English fluency of the students.
  • A CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certificate must be provided by the students.
  • Students also need to provide valid proofs of vaccinations of diseases, like measles, mumps, chickenpox, diphtheria, tetanus, rubella and pertussis.
  • Apart from this, at the time of application, students must provide a negative report of Chest X-ray, Tuberculosis and a flu shot.
  • A check up on the criminal background as well as a drug test is also required.

Coursework

The coursework of the EMT training must follows the standards of the National Emergency Medical Services Education. The curriculum of the training program should be accredited by the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and the Arizona Department of Health Services. The different levels of EMT programs teach you the following:

  • Legal & ethical issues and EMT Systems
  • Anatomy & physiology
  • Lifting and moving patients properly
  • Airway management and oxygen techniques
  • Patient assessment, including patient record, communication and documentation
  • Emergency cases of respiratory, cardiac, pharmacology, diabetic, allergy, poison or overdose, gynaecology, and obstetrics
  • Trauma emergencies, including bleeding and shock management, head, neck, chest or spinal injuries.
  • Pediatric emergencies
  • Handling the patients while transportation and at hazardous sites, rescue operations.
  • Handling multiple patients at a time

At the end of training, a written and practical examination needs to be attempted and cleared by the students in order to become eligible for the EMT certification in Arizona.
