EMT Training in Michigan

In order to become Emergency Medical Technician, students must pursue EMT training in Michigan from a state-approved training institute. This training makes it easy for the aspirants to clear the NREMT exams in one go. EMT or paramedic training is the stepping stone for prospective EMTs towards a bright career. The training programs in Michigan are accredited by the Michigan Department of Community Health EMS & Trauma Systems Section.

  • Minimum age of 18 years is compulsory for a student if he/she wants to take up an EMT training program in Michigan.
  • He/she must own a valid driving license.
  • Students must ensure that they have a CPR/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification maintained throughout the entire duration of EMT training.
  • Prospective students must submit their high school certificate or GED certificate. Sometimes, they can also be asked to submit their score-cards of COMPASS or ACCUPLACER exams, which examine their proficiency in maths and English.
  • A drug test is mandatory, and candidates should also undergo a check on criminal background.
  • Students applying for EMT training must provide their vaccination proofs of measles, diphtheria, tetanus, mumps, chickenpox, rubella, pertussis and hepatitis B. Students should also provide the negative reports of tuberculosis test, chest X-ray along with flu shot, done in the past one year.

Medical First Responder

This is the first level of EMT training in Michigan. It includes topics, such as:

  • Documentation, and keeping a record of patients
  • Managing more serious cases of medical and trauma emergencies
  • Pediatric assessment, which also includes fluid therapy and intra-osseous cannulation
  • Cardiac ECG interpretation
  • Epinephrine auto injector and other medications
  • Providing assistance to other EMTs and paramedics

Students are also required to complete  clinical training either in an ambulance service or at a nearby hospital.

EMT-Paramedic

This is the highest level of EMT training in Michigan, which includes these subjects of study:

  • More enhanced airway control, which also includes surgical cricothyroitomy
  • Ways that are more comprehensive in handling patient assessment
  • Pharmacology
  • Advanced cardiovascular treatment
  • Intravenous fluid and administration of medication
  • Advanced cardiac life support certification
  • Handling emergencies of cardiac, neonatal, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology along with an in-depth understanding of pulmonology, neurology, urology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, and gerontology
  • How to deal with life-threatening injuries or illnesses?
  • Pediatric assessment
  • Assisting hospital staff

In the end of the training, students are ought to undergo clinical internships that are conducted at the nearby hospital or in an ambulance service.
