EMT Program in North Carolina
EMT program in the state of North Carolina helps a student to become a skilled EMT, who is capable of providing willing services in case of health and security emergencies. Students, who want to pursue their career in emergency medical services, have to follow a set process of acquiring the state license.
First and foremost step to be taken by an EMT aspirant is to get enrolled with a certified program institute. The students are required to complete an EMT-B program. This program acquaints students with the methods of basic life support.
In North Carolina, to become competent enough to acquire state license, students have to qualify NREMT-B (National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Basics) examinations.
Essential Requirements
Every state lays emphasis on fulfilling certain mandatory requirements to get enrolled in any certified program school or institute. These requirements differ from state to state. The prospective students, who want to join program center and complete EMT program successfully in North Carolina, have to consider the following essential requirements:
- First and foremost requirement is that candidate, enrolling in a program, should have attained an age of 18 years or above.
- Every aspirant needs to hold an authorized driver’s license.
- The students are required to show proof of their high school diploma or General Education Development (GED).
- Every candidate has to get a CPR certification.
- An applicant must possess good communication skills, i.e., he/she must be capable of writing, reading and speaking the English language.
- Students should be able to read at a level of 10th grade.
- You may be asked to submit their placement results.
- Physical and mental fitness is also required.
- Prospective students have to go through a drug test.
- They are required to provide the results of drug test and criminal history check.
- All the aspirants must have to undergo Tdap vaccination to protect themselves from diseases, like tetanus, chickenpox, pertussis, and diphtheria.
- The students may also be asked to submit evidence of the following immunizations:
- Hepatitis B
- Rubella
- Mumps
- Measles
- They also need to go for a flu shot and a negative tuberculosis skin PPD test.
Program Coursework
To qualify the examination and obtain the state license, an EMT aspirant always thinks of gaining some essential education by undergoing a program. For preparing a talented EMT, the state of North Carolina has designed a series of program programs. These program levels include certain methods and procedures to be used during basic life support emergencies. The levels of the program are:
- Medical or First Responder- The first or initial level of EMT program is Medical Responder. Under this level, students are made familiar with basic life support skills. The students are taught methods to operate ambulances. With the passage of time, all the students become skilled in proper airway management, patient assessment, vital signs, and haemorrhage and splinting control.
- EMT-Basic- The next level of EMT program is EMT-basic. After the entry-level program, EMT-basic helps a student in gaining pretty much knowledge than the first responder. Through a combination of practical, as well as classroom program, students are taught methods to manage childbirth emergencies, heart disorders, diabetes, etc. They also learn to manage critically injured patients.
- EMT-Intermediate- An advanced level than EMT-basics is EMT-intermediate. Under this level of program, students become aware of advanced procedures, like maintenance and insertion of intravenous lines, usage of advanced methods of airway management, basic pharmacological therapy, soft tissues injuries, musculoskeletal injuries, etc.
- EMT-Paramedic- After completing three levels of EMT program, a student reaches to EMT-paramedic level. Under this program level, students are instructed about specific emergency handling methods, like administration of IV fluids, cardiac pacing, defibrillation, advanced airway administration, cardioversion, etc. The candidates are also taught about pre-hospital life support medications.
Cost and Duration
Depending on the duration and cost of the program, a student can make a decision to join any EMT program institute of his choice. Every program school has a different fee structure. The duration of EMT program is as follows:
- EMT-B: This is the first level of the program, which gets completed in nearly 8-11 weeks. In this stage, a candidate learns about the basic methods of life support during an emergency.
- EMT-I: This is the second stage of EMT program, which gets completed in 30-350 hours. In this stage, a student has to complete a practical program along with lectures and coursework.
- EMT-P: It is the last stage of EMT program, in which, a student learns about advanced techniques of life support. It usually requires 6 months to 2 years to complete this program.
The EMT-basic course can be availed in approximately $200, which includes tuition cost, liability insurance, and other costs.
