EMT Program in Florida

EMT program in Florida instructs students to provide the pre-hospital care to the victims of various trauma cases or medical emergencies. In this program, students learn the necessary techniques to handle patients while providing them with life-saving services. EMT program in Florida is authorized under Florida Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. The three main levels of EMT program are Basic, Intermediate, and Paramedic, but in Florida, most of the colleges provide the program for the Basic and Paramedic level of course.

Eligibility Criteria


There are some general requirements that must be fulfilled to become eligible for EMT program in Florida:

  • Only those students, who are of 18 years or above, can enrol for the program.
  • Tenth-grade level or high school must be passed by the student.
  • A legitimate driving license is a must for all students.
  • A current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification should be maintained by all the students.
  • Some schools may also need the students to provide their scores of ACCUPLACER or COMPASS tests. This test the student’s fluency in English, as well as the mathematical skills.
  • A proof of vaccinations, such as measles, chickenpox, mumps, diphtheria, rubella, tetanus, hepatitis B, and pertussis, is also required to be submitted.
  • Students must provide negative reports of tuberculosis, chest X-ray, and a flu shot, within the last 12 months. This is necessary because the students come in contact with the patients during their clinical internships.
  • A drug test and a criminal background check are also obligatory.

Coursework

This is the general coursework that a student is required to study:

  • EMT systems
  • Legal and ethical issues
  • Florida EMS rules and laws
  • Vital signs
  • Basic anatomy and physiology
  • Airway management
  • Oxygen techniques
  • Respiratory, cardiac, diabetic, poison/overdose, environmental, gynaecology and obstetrics emergencies
  • Infants and children
  • Spine, head, neck and chest injuries
  • Injuries of soft-tissues and musculoskeletal
  • Patient assessment
  • Ways to handle multiple patients
  • Ways to lift and move patients in a proper manner
  • Handling hazardous conditions

The coursework is divided according to the levels of the program.

Duration and Fees

The approximate cost of EMT-basic program in Florida is between $2,400 and $3,300. For the paramedic program, one has to pay around $5,622. It takes around three months to complete a basic program of EMT while a paramedic program may take around 10-11 months approximately.
