EMT Program in New Mexico

To become a skilled EMT in the state of New Mexico, the candidates have to finish a state-approved EMT-B program course. New Mexico is one of those states, which conducts its own licensing and certification examinations to prepare students for a bright career in Emergency Medical Services. The state of New Mexico has laid down several procedures to be followed by the students to obtain the license.

EMT program in New Mexico makes a student qualified to acquire a license and perform duties and responsibilities, like assessing the patient’s condition, trauma emergency, etc. for the welfare of the people. It should be kept in mind that the state of New Mexico does not consider NREMT (National Registry Emergency Medical Technician) as the basis for obtaining a license. All the EMTs are also required to qualify both practical and written exams conducted by the state of New Mexico.

Remember, if a candidate has qualified NREMT examinations or is certified from other states, he/she still needs to pass a transition course to become certified in the state of New Mexico.

Mandatory EMT Program Requirements


Before joining any program center, a student has to fulfill the following requirements to become a part of program. These essential requirements are as follows:

  • Age of 18 years or more is a must.
  • Students have to carry an authorized driving license.
  • The candidate should possess a GED or high school diploma.
  • The applicant must be able to read at 10th-grade level.
  • The EMT prospects have to submit their placement reports.
  • Prospective students also need to hold a valid CPR certification.
  • Aspirants should be skilled in reading, writing, and speaking the English language.
  • Prospective EMTs should have successfully undergone a criminal background check.
  • The candidates also have to go through a drug test.
  • All the prospects applying for the program should be mentally and physically fit to perform necessary activities.
  • The students also need to submit reports of vaccinations, like rubella, Hepatitis B, measles, and mumps.
  • The candidate should also undergo Tdap immunization against diphtheria, chickenpox, tetanus, and pertussis.

Program Curricula

For an EMT, it is very necessary to undergo proper program in order to gain desired knowledge to perform any emergency activity. The program programs in New Mexico help students to get equipped with skills, which are required at basic life support level. The EMT program in New Mexico is divided into three levels. The scope of activities, which a student learns, varies at each level. These levels are steps to reach the ultimate destination of acquiring state license and become a well-trained EMT. The EMT levels are:

  • EMT-Basic: This is the lowest technical level of EMT program. Under this level, a candidate learns about methods and procedures of managing and assessing an injured patient.
  • EMT-Intermediate: As per the hierarchy of program levels, when a student becomes able to perform methods and techniques at a basic level, he/she gets promoted to next advanced level of program. Under this level, a student learns about advanced procedures to handle any emergency. 
  • EMT-Paramedic: When a student is well trained with basic, as well as advanced program techniques, he/she is considered to be a skilled EMT. Now, an EMT learns about highest levels of pre-hospital care.

Duration and Fees of EMT Program Program


It is a very important aspect, which needs to be considered before joining any program school or institute. Students, who are seeking for various program institutions have to consider the length and cost of the program at each level. The length at different levels is as follows:

  • EMT-Basics: The EMT-Basic level of program requires almost 13 credit hours for a candidate to get acquainted with methods and procedures used during an emergency. This basic level of program is completed in roughly two semesters.

The length of program for part-time students is much extended than full-time students. They usually require 8-11 weeks to complete basic level program.

  • EMT- Intermediate: At the second or advanced level of program, a student requires almost 26-27 credit hours of the program. The students usually learn about advanced techniques and methods to handle emergencies. This program gets completed in three semesters if 2 semesters are completed in EMT-Basics. 
  • EMT- Paramedic: This level generally completes in 12 months.

Apart from the length of program programs, it is very important to know the cost of the program programs. The cost of the program depends on the residential status of a candidate.

  • Residents of New Mexico: For the residents of New Mexico, the cost of the program is $48 for every credit hour.
  • Non-Residents: For non-residents, the cost of the program for 1-6 credit hours is $48 and for 7-11 credit hours, it is $263.

Apart from basic cost, some additional charges are also included to pursue EMS program courses.
