  • EMT (Emergency Medical Technician): Under this level of program, a candidate is made aware of several important techniques for handling any emergencies. These techniques can be pulse oximetry, advanced airway management, spinal immobilization, oxygen therapy, suctioning, cardiac monitoring, defibrillation, usage of mechanical CPR device, controlling blood blockage, monitoring blood pressure, monitoring blood glucose, assistance during childbirth, and instructions about various medications.
  • EMT-I (Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate/85): With the successful completion of two levels, a candidate steps forward to intermediate level, in which, various skills, like ventilation management, advanced oxygen therapy, IV fluid management, management of musculoskeletal emergencies,  cardiac monitoring, controlling haemorrhage, splinting management, spinal immobilization, administration of Epi-pen, monitoring blood glucose and blood pressure and other medication skills are taught.

  • AEMT (Advanced Emergency Medical Technician): AEMT or fourth level of program instructs students about various advanced techniques and methods to be used in case of emergencies. At this stage, all the skills that are learned in the previous stages are revised with more advanced methods and techniques. They also learn about managing crystalloids, maintaining medicated or non-medicated IV fluids, etc. 
  • Paramedic: It is the last phase of EMT program, which helps an EMT to become a paramedic. When a candidate reaches this level of a program, it is implicit that he/she is capable of handling any emergency. The advanced level of skills, which a candidate learns, are cricoid pressure administration, head lift, oxygen therapy, suctioning, intubation, chest decompression, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), cardiac monitoring, spinal immobilization, monitoring thrombolytic therapy, monitoring arterial line, maintaining IV fluids, handling automated or non-automated defibrillation, and various medications.

Duration and Cost of EMT Program Program

The EMT program is concentrated towards providing emergency care during an accident, illness, or injury. The program, so provided by the program schools, is somewhat similar in various states. But, the length and cost of the program varies. Basically, the duration of EMT program is:

  • EMT-Basic: Normally, the program lasts for 8-11 weeks.
  • EMT-Intermediate: The second level of EMT program is almost of 30-350 hours.

The cost of the program is nearly $710 (excluding testing fees and book cost). However, this cost is subject to change as per several factors.
