EMT Program in Texas

EMT program in Texas is a very important step for students, who want to make a wonderful career in Emergency Medical Services or EMS. The program makes a student perfect in managing pre-hospital medical care in an emergency. The state of Texas follows the examination procedure laid by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician. You can master all the skills by taking five levels of EMT program.

Mandatory EMT Program Requirements


Students, who are ready to offer medical services in case of any urgent situation in Texas and want to become a licensed Emergency Medical Technician, have to follow some essential requirements, which are:

  • Minimum eighteen years of age is essential to be attained by the applicants.
  • The aspirants should complete their high school or general education development.
  • All the prospective EMTs have to carry a valid driving license.
  • The applicants also need to hold a CPR certification. This certification should be retained throughout the EMT program.
  • The prospective students should be able to read at 10th-grade level.
  • All students have to undergo a drug test
  • It is also mandatory for all students to submit the reports of the drug test for a criminal background check.
  • The students must have the capacity to lift and balance 125 pounds and 250 pounds without and with assistance, respectively.
  • Rubella, measles, mumps, and hepatitis B are some of the diseases against which, the applicants have to undergo immunization.
  • The candidates also have to get Tdap vaccination done against tetanus, pertussis, diphtheria, and chickenpox.
  • The applicants have to get a flu shot, a negative chest X-ray, and a negative tuberculosis skin PPD test.
  • The applicants may be asked to present proof of various academic skills tests, like COMPASS or ASSET.

Program Coursework

The program coursework for EMTs is almost similar in all the states, but the program levels differ from state to state. Each level imparts different knowledge to the trainees, which help them to broaden their skills. The different levels of EMT program in Texas are:

  • ECA (Emergency Care Attendant): From its name, it is understood that an ECA is a person responsible for providing pre-hospital care during basic life support emergency.
  • EMT-B (Emergency Medical Technician-Basic): The second level is EMT-B. Airway management, patient assessment, etc. are some of the topics that are covered in this phase of the program.
  • EMT-I (Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate): The third level of the program is EMT-I. This is the stage at which, students are instructed with higher level or complex procedures, like methods to manage cardiac, gynecological and respiratory emergencies, etc.
  • EMT-P (Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic): The fourth level of the program is EMT-P, which is the nearest level to become Paramedics. A student, at this phase, is believed to master all necessary skills, including methods used at ALS and BLS levels.

  • LP (Licensed Paramedic): The last stage of the program is Licensed Paramedic. A student, at this stage, is well-versed with all the necessary skills and is also eligible to qualify required examinations and provide services.

Program Cost and Duration

Before getting admission to any program school, a student always needs to evaluate two main things of the program, namely duration and cost. Every student wants to join a program school, which is feasible for him/her and provides required program to become eligible for the state license.

In Texas, the length of an EMT program is almost one whole semester.

However, the cost of program differs from school to school. Generally, the cost of the program ranges from $1,990 to $7,200.
